Where Bloom fits · the biggest difference

Clonex gets them rooted, Bloom carries on from there.

HDI’s range is propagation (Clonex gel, solution and mist, Root Riot cubes) plus a short feed line: IONIC Grow and Bloom, IONIC PK Boost and MotherPlant for stock plants. Their list has no seaweed, fish, humic, cal-mag, silica or stage additives. That’s where Bloom’s weekly bottles come in, on top of IONIC or MotherPlant.

  • Stays as is: Clonex Rooting Gel, Clone Solution and Mist, Root Riot, IONIC Grow and Bloom, MotherPlant A and B.
  • Both have one: a late-flower PK. Run one, or test them side by side.
  • Not on their list: kelp, tuna, humic, sea minerals, cal-mag, carbs, silica, stage additives and foliars.
Where a job isn’t on HydroDynamics International’s list

Why each one fits

What the Bloom product does, the research behind that kind of input, and where it sits in a program that already runs.

Not on their list · weekly

Kelp and tuna over IONIC

What it does. Seaweed is southern bull kelp; Seafuel is tuna and kelp. Both run at 1 ml/L weekly: Seaweed seedling through the flush, Seafuel clone through late flower, tapering at the flush.

The science Well supported

Reviews of seaweed extracts report effects on growth and stress tolerance across many crops. Work on protein hydrolysates, which fish inputs belong to, is newer and links them to nutrient uptake, mostly under stress. None of it tests these bottles or cannabis.

Ali et al. (2021), Plants (review) · Malécange et al. (2023), Int J Mol Sci (review)

How it stacks. IONIC is one bottle at 5 ml/L, so the tank stays simple. Seaweed and Seafuel go in after it (our read: check runoff EC when you add anything).

Seaweed · Seafuel

Not on their list · root zone

Humic acid and sea minerals

What it does. Humate is 10% humic acid at 2.5 ml/L weekly, seedling through flush. Sea Minerals is trace minerals from sea water at 0.13 ml/L weekly, veg to bloom.

The science Well supported

A major review links humic substances to changes in root structure and function tied to nutrient uptake, including more lateral roots. It doesn’t test either company’s products.

Canellas et al. (2015), Scientia Horticulturae (review)

How it stacks. Once Clonex has done its job, Humate supports the root zone from transplant on. Small doses, no change to the IONIC rate (our read).

Humate · Sea Minerals

Not on their list · support

Cal-Mag and Silica

What it does. Cal-Mag is calcium and magnesium with iron and zinc, 1 ml/L weekly in soil, coco or hydro, stopping at the final flush. Silica is potassium silicate at 0.33 ml/L weekly, added first. These are mineral supplements, so there’s no study cited for them here.

How it stacks. Silica into plain water first, then Cal-Mag, then IONIC (our read: the usual order for silicate and calcium).

Cal-Mag · Silica

Not on their list · by stage

One bottle per stage

What it does. Pre in mid veg, Ultra at the flip, Phat in flower weeks 3 and 4, Ooze from week 5 through the final flush, and Final for the last two weeks alongside Ooze. 1–2.5 ml/L, weekly. These are timing tools, so there’s no study cited for them here.

How it stacks. IONIC Grow and Bloom stay the same all the way through; these add the stage changes on top. IONIC PK Boost already covers the last weeks, so PK stays optional (our read).

Pre · Ultra · Phat · Ooze · Final

Where we fit together

Where the programs complement each other

High · weekly

IONIC as the base, Bloom on top

IONIC is a one-bottle base with nothing else in the tank. Seaweed, Seafuel, Humate, Sea Minerals, Cal-Mag and Silica go in at 0.13–2.5 ml/L weekly over it.

High · propagation to transplant

Clonex to the tray, Bloom from transplant

HDI’s cloning kit ends at transplant. Roots, Humate and Groigen pick up from there, so the two ranges hand over at the same point (our read).

Medium · mother rooms

MotherPlant with weekly tonics

MotherPlant is a stock-plant base. Seaweed, Humate and Silica are weekly tonics that can run with it in a mother room (our read).

Timing comes from each HDI product page. Clonex Mist runs until transplant. MotherPlant feeds stock plants rather than a crop stage, so it’s pale on the veg column (our read). PK Boost is for the final few weeks before harvest, drawn from week 5 here (our read). Bloom’s bars follow its weekly feed charts; pale Bloom bars are as-needed bottles.

Where the programs overlap

Where both ranges have one

Put it side by side

Where both ranges have a product for the same job, the fair answer is a test in your own room. Here’s what to watch and how to keep it fair.

IONIC PK Boost (HydroDynamics)andPK
What to watch: Start and stop week, and runoff EC each week, with IONIC Bloom held the same.

Keeping it fair

  1. Same plants. Clones off the same mother, same cultivar, same age.
  2. Same room. Same light, climate, media, pot size and watering.
  3. Same base. Keep the base feed and EC the same on both sides.
  4. One change. Change only the product being tested, and write down what you see each week.

Already covered

  • Propagation. Clonex Rooting Gel, Clone Solution, Mist and Mist Concentrate, and Root Riot cubes.
  • Base feed. IONIC Grow and IONIC Bloom, one bottle, every medium.
  • Stock plants. MotherPlant A and B.
  • Late flower. IONIC PK Boost.

Stays exactly as is

  • The Clonex range and Root Riot. Bloom has no cloning gel, clone feed or media.
  • IONIC Grow and Bloom. Bloom has no single-part base.
  • MotherPlant A and B. Bloom has no stock-plant feed.
  • IONIC PK Boost. If it’s working in your room, keep it, or test PK next to it.
More detail

Background, science and sources

Who HydroDynamics International are

HydroDynamics International (HDI) says it has been family owned and operated since 1997. It makes propagation products and fertilisers for hydro, soil and soilless growing. The pages we read don’t give a street address or a parent company.

The range is the Clonex line (Rooting Gel, Clone Solution, Mist and Mist Concentrate), Root Riot starter cubes, IONIC Grow, IONIC Bloom and IONIC PK Boost, and MotherPlant two-part for stock plants. They publish a propagation guide, a cloning guide, a seed starting SOP, an IONIC feed schedule and SDS sheets. Sales run through dealers, with a store locator and a dealer support page.

What each company brings

HydroDynamics International: A full cloning kit (gel, clone feed, mist and starter cubes), a single-part base for every medium, a PK finisher, a stock-plant feed, and printed propagation guides.

Bloom: one additive for each stage of the crop, seaweed, humic and sea mineral inputs, foliar sprays, and weekly feed charts for soil, coco and hydro. Rates and timing are on every product page.

Cropping Solutions, the other brand under Agricultural Organics, isn’t part of this report.

Dose basis: how each side counts

HDI prints rates per gallon and per litre, to use with each irrigation: IONIC Grow and Bloom at 5 ml/L, PK Boost at 2 ml/L, MotherPlant at 15–20 ml per gallon of each part (about 4–5.3 ml/L). Bloom prints ml per litre on a weekly feed chart; Bloom’s PK is 1 ml/L.

HDI’s rates go in with each irrigation; Bloom’s sit on a weekly chart, so the same number on each side isn’t the same weekly amount.

Mix calculator

Rates as printed on each company’s page (1 US gallon is 3.785 L). Bloom’s rates are per litre of nutrient solution, dosed weekly per its feed charts. Pick a product and your tank size.

Potassium in the plantWell supported

Hasanuzzaman and colleagues (2018) review potassium’s roles in plants: protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, enzyme activation, stomatal control and photosynthesis, plus tolerance to salinity, drought and heat.

Why it matters here: IONIC PK Boost and Bloom’s PK are both PK products, so potassium is the shared ground. The review is general plant science and doesn’t compare products or timing.
