Where Bloom fits · the biggest difference

Their tonics stop at the buds, ours run to the flush.

Kelp Me Kelp You stops at the first sign of buds and Wholly Mackerel at early fruiting, both every other week. Bloom’s Seaweed runs weekly from seedling through the flush, and Seafuel into late flower. Add a liquid humic and a silica, neither on FoxFarm’s liquid list, and that’s the clearest fit.

  • Stays as is: your FoxFarm soil or coco, the liquid trio or Cultivation Nation 3-part, Microbe Brew, Boomerang, SledgeHammer and pH UP and DOWN.
  • Both have one: flower boosters, kelp, fish, roots, carbs and cal-mag. Run one, or test them side by side.
  • Not on their list: a liquid humic, sea minerals and silica.
Where both ranges have one

Put it side by side

Where both ranges have a product for the same job, the fair answer is a test in your own room. Here’s what to watch and how to keep it fair.

Open Sesame®andUltra
What to watch: Stretch height and node spacing over flower weeks 1–2.
Beastie Bloomz®andPhat
What to watch: Bud site count and runoff EC over flower weeks 3–4.
Cha Ching®andPK
What to watch: Runoff EC and pH drift through late flower.
Kelp Me Kelp You®andSeaweed
What to watch: Leaf colour and new growth rate through veg.
Wholly Mackerel®andSeafuel
What to watch: Internode length and leaf colour across veg.
Kangaroots®andRoots
What to watch: Root mass and colour at transplant.
Bembé®andSWTNR
What to watch: Runoff EC and leaf condition from first buds to harvest.
Cal-Mag (FoxFarm)andCal-Mag

Keeping it fair

  1. Same plants. Clones off the same mother, same cultivar, same age.
  2. Same room. Same light, climate, media, pot size and watering.
  3. Same base. Keep the base feed and EC the same on both sides.
  4. One change. Change only the product being tested, and write down what you see each week.

Timing comes from each FoxFarm product page. Hatched bars are every-other-watering or every-other-week use. Their solubles are timed by plant week and bud set in the garden tips, so placing them on these stages is our read. Their Cal-Mag is as needed, at most weekly, from just before buds, so it’s pale. Bloom’s bars follow its weekly feed charts; pale Bloom bars are as-needed bottles or tapers.

Where a job isn’t on FoxFarm’s list

Why each one fits

What the Bloom product does, the research behind that kind of input, and where it sits in a program that already runs.

Both have one · past the buds

Kelp and fish into flower

What it does. Seaweed is southern bull kelp at 1 ml/L weekly, seedling through the flush. Seafuel is tuna and kelp at 1 ml/L weekly, clone through late flower, tapering at the flush.

The science Well supported

Reviews of seaweed extracts report effects on growth, root development and stress tolerance across many crops. Work on protein hydrolysates, the group fish inputs sit in, is newer and links them to nutrient uptake. None of it tests these bottles.

Ali et al. (2021), Plants (review) · Malécange et al. (2023), Int J Mol Sci (review)

How it stacks. Run Kelp Me Kelp You and Wholly Mackerel in veg as FoxFarm prints them, then carry kelp and fish on with Seaweed and Seafuel after first buds (our read).

Seaweed · Seafuel

Not on their liquid list · tank

Liquid humic and sea minerals

What it does. Humate is 10% humic acid at 2.5 ml/L weekly, seedling through flush. Sea Minerals is trace minerals from sea water at 0.13 ml/L weekly, veg to bloom.

The science Well supported

A major review links humic substances to more lateral root growth and to root changes tied to nutrient uptake. It covers humic substances in general, not a product.

Canellas et al. (2015), Scientia Horticulturae (review)

How it stacks. FoxFarm’s humic acids come in Happy Frog Soil Conditioner, a garden soil amendment. On Coco Loco or hydro, Humate is a tank input next to the liquid trio or Cultivation Nation (our read).

Humate · Sea Minerals

Not on their list · veg to early flower

Silica, added first

What it does. Potassium silicate at 0.33 ml/L weekly, added to the water first, veg through early flower, tapering in late bloom.

The science Emerging

An editorial on silicon research says it helps plants with some stresses, but there’s no conclusive evidence on how, and most work is on grasses.

Deshmukh, Ma and Belanger (2017), Frontiers in Plant Science (editorial)

How it stacks. Goes in first, then the FoxFarm base. Grow Big Hydroponic’s page asks for pH 5.8–6.3, so re-check pH after silica (our read).

Silica

Where we fit together

Where the programs complement each other

High · first buds to the flush

Kelp and fish past the first buds

Kelp Me Kelp You stops at first buds and Wholly Mackerel at early fruiting. Seaweed runs weekly through the flush and Seafuel into late flower, so a grower can carry kelp and fish on once their veg tonics finish.

High · coco and hydro tanks

Liquid humic for Coco Loco and hydro runs

FoxFarm’s humic acids come in a garden soil amendment, and there’s no liquid humic or sea-mineral bottle. Humate and Sea Minerals go in the tank at 2.5 and 0.13 ml/L weekly, next to Grow Big Hydroponic or Cultivation Nation.

Medium · veg

Silica and cal-mag before the buds

Their Cal-Mag starts just before bud development, and there’s no silica on their list. Silica at 0.33 ml/L weekly from veg, and Bloom’s Cal-Mag from veg if a grower wants it earlier (our read).

More detail

Background, science and sources

Who FoxFarm are

FoxFarm is a soil and fertilizer company born and raised in Humboldt County, California. Its About page, from founder and CEO Willy, says it started with a garden soil that wasn’t sterilized, and it has supplied growers since 1984.

The range covers potting soils and mixes, the liquid trio, Grow Big Hydroponic, the Cultivation Nation 3-part and growing media, soluble flower boosters, the Bush Doctor additives, Happy Frog dry fertilizers and pH adjusters. They publish feeding schedules for soil, hydro and the Cultivation Nation 3-part.

What each company brings

FoxFarm: Potting soils, coco and growing media, a soil conditioner, the liquid trio and a 3-part base, soluble flower boosters, Bush Doctor kelp, fish, carb, cal-mag, microbial and rinse products, dry fertilizers, pH adjusters and printed feeding schedules.

Bloom: one additive for each stage of the crop, seaweed, humic and sea mineral inputs, foliar sprays, and weekly feed charts for soil, coco and hydro. Rates and timing are on every product page.

Cropping Solutions, the other brand under Agricultural Organics, isn’t part of this report.

Dose basis: how each side counts

FoxFarm prints rates in teaspoons, tablespoons or grams per gallon. Most liquids are every other watering or every other week; the solubles are once a week in soil. Kelp Me Kelp You is 5–10 mL per gallon every other week, about 1.3–2.6 ml/L each time. Their Cal-Mag is 5 mL per gallon, about 1.3 ml/L, no more than once a week.

Bloom prints ml per litre on a weekly feed chart. So the per-application numbers on each side aren’t the same weekly amount, and the analyses differ too.

Mix calculator

Rates as printed on each company’s page (1 US gallon is 3.785 L). Bloom’s rates are per litre of nutrient solution, dosed weekly per its feed charts. Pick a product and your tank size.

Potassium in the plantWell supported

Hasanuzzaman and colleagues (2018) review potassium’s roles in enzyme activity, stomata, photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism, and in tolerance to drought, salt and heat.

Why it matters here: Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, Cha Ching and Bloom’s PK all bring potassium in flower, so add up the total before stacking them (our read). The review doesn’t compare products.
