Where Bloom fits · the biggest difference

Silica, humic and carbs: the three not on their list.

House & Garden’s US list has root, amino, kelp, bloom, PK, cal-mag and foliar products, but no silica, no humic and no carbohydrate additive. Bloom Silica goes in first, then their base, with Humate and SWTNR weekly on top. None of the three crosses over with a House & Garden bottle.

  • Stays as is: Cocos, Aqua Flakes, Soil or Bio 1-Component, the Powder Set, Drip Clean and Nitrogen Boost.
  • Both have one: root, amino, kelp, early-bloom, late-bloom, PK, cal-mag and foliar products.
  • Not on their list: silica, humic acid, carbohydrates and sea minerals.
Where a job isn’t on House & Garden’s list

Why each one fits

What the Bloom product does, the research behind that kind of input, and where it sits in a program that already runs.

Not on their list · veg to early flower

Silica, first in the tank

What it does. Bloom Silica is potassium silicate at 0.33 ml/L weekly, added first, from veg through early flower and tapering in late bloom.

The science Emerging

A 2017 editorial says silicon is linked to stress tolerance, but there’s no conclusive evidence on exactly how, and most work is in grasses.

Deshmukh et al. (2017), Frontiers in Plant Science (editorial)

How it stacks. Silica goes in before the A & B or the powders, then their usual steps. Our read: check pH after mixing, as you would with any silica.

Silica

Not on their list · root zone

Humic acid and sea minerals

What it does. Humate is 10% humic acid at 2.5 ml/L weekly, seedling through flush. Sea Minerals is trace minerals from sea water at 0.13 ml/L weekly, veg to bloom.

The science Well supported

A major review links humic substances to more lateral roots and to root and shoot changes tied to nutrient uptake. It doesn’t test either company’s products.

Canellas et al. (2015), Scientia Horticulturae (review)

How it stacks. Roots Excelurator stops at mid flower and Amino Treatment three weeks out, per their pages. Humate carries on to the flush (our read).

Humate · Sea Minerals

Not on their list · mid veg on

Carbohydrates in the feed

What it does. SWTNR is carbohydrates and potassium at 1 ml/L weekly, veg week 2 to the flush. It’s a carb enhancer, so there’s no study cited for it here.

How it stacks. None of their additives is a carb product, so SWTNR sits alongside BUD-XL and the PK bottles rather than in place of one (our read).

SWTNR

Where we fit together

Where the programs complement each other

High · veg to early flower

Silica in an Aqua Flakes or powder tank

Their US list has no silica. Bloom Silica goes in first at 0.33 ml/L weekly, before the A & B or the powders.

High · seedling to flush

Humic after their root products stop

Roots Excelurator runs to mid flower and Amino Treatment to three weeks out, and their list has no humic product. Humate runs at 2.5 ml/L weekly through the flush.

Medium · whole cycle

Calcium for Bio 1-Component Soil

Their one-part soil feed has no added calcium, and the page says to add it as needed. That’s a cal-mag call: CalMag Powder or Bloom Cal-Mag at 1 ml/L weekly, one or the other.

Where the programs overlap

Timing comes from each House & Garden product page, which counts late flower back from harvest: Top Booster for one week 3–4 weeks out, Shooting Powder and Top Shooter over the last three weeks. Fitting that to these stages on an 8-week flower is our read, so pale bars mark windows that move with flower length. Magic Green is every two weeks, so it’s pale. Bloom’s bars follow its weekly feed charts; pale Bloom bars are as-needed bottles.

Already covered

  • Root support. Roots Excelurator and Gold do the job Bloom Roots does.
  • Kelp and amino. Algen Extract and Amino Treatment sit near Seaweed and Seafuel.
  • Bloom and finish. Multi Zen, BUD-XL, Top Booster and Top Shooter line up with Pre, Ultra, Phat, Ooze, PK and Final.
  • Cal-mag and foliar. CalMag Powder, Magnesium Boost and Magic Green are in the range.

Stays exactly as is

  • Cocos, Aqua Flakes, Soil A & B, Bio 1-Component. Your liquid base stays.
  • The Powder Set. Bloom has no dry base.
  • Drip Clean. Bloom has no product for salt buildup.
  • Nitrogen Boost. Bloom has no straight nitrogen top-up.
  • House & Garden Coco. Bloom doesn’t sell growing media.
Where both ranges have one

Put it side by side

Where both ranges have a product for the same job, the fair answer is a test in your own room. Here’s what to watch and how to keep it fair.

Roots Excelurator · GoldandRoots
What to watch: Root mass and colour at transplant.
Amino TreatmentandSeafuel
What to watch: Veg growth rate and new leaf colour from veg week 2.
Algen ExtractandSeaweed
What to watch: Internode spacing and leaf colour through veg and early bloom.
Multi ZenandPre · Ultra
What to watch: Branch count in veg, then stretch over flower weeks 1–2.
BUD-XLandPhat · Ooze
What to watch: Bud density and dry weight per plant at harvest.
Top Booster · Top ShooterandPK · Final
What to watch: Runoff EC and dry weight across the last three weeks.
CalMag PowderandCal-Mag
What to watch: Runoff EC, pH drift and lower-leaf colour across the week.

Keeping it fair

  1. Same plants. Clones off the same mother, same cultivar, same age.
  2. Same room. Same light, climate, media, pot size and watering.
  3. Same base. Keep the base feed and EC the same on both sides.
  4. One change. Change only the product being tested, and write down what you see each week.

Background, science and sources

Who House & Garden are

House & Garden makes plant nutrients and is located in Arcata, California, per their About page. Their homepage says “Creating Premium Nutrients Since 1990,” and the site carries Hydrofarm branding, with retailer sign-up going through a Hydrofarm contact page.

The US range covers liquid two-part bases for coco, hydro and soil, a one-part soil feed, a soluble dry powder base, a long list of additives and a coco growing medium. They sell through retail stores found by a US store locator, with an international distributors page for other countries.

What each company brings

House & Garden: Liquid and dry base nutrients, root, amino, kelp, vigour, flowering and finishing additives, cal-mag and magnesium, a nitrogen top-up, a foliar spray, a salt-clearing additive, coco media, and feed charts.

Bloom: one additive for each stage of the crop, seaweed, humic and sea mineral inputs, foliar sprays, and weekly feed charts for soil, coco and hydro. Rates and timing are on every product page.

Cropping Solutions, the other brand under Agricultural Organics, isn’t part of this report.

Dose basis: how each side counts

House & Garden print rates per gallon and per litre of feed water, mostly added per feeding across a set window. Shooting Powder is dosed in sachets per 25 gallons (100 L), and Magic Green is sprayed once every two weeks. Bloom prints ml per litre on a weekly feed chart.

Their additives go in per feeding and Bloom’s sit on a weekly chart, so the same number on each side isn’t the same weekly amount. For example, BUD-XL and Multi Zen are 1 ml/L per their pages; Bloom’s Phat and Ooze are 2.5 ml/L weekly.

Mix calculator

Rates as printed on each company’s page (1 US gallon is 3.785 L). Bloom’s rates are per litre of nutrient solution, dosed weekly per its feed charts. Pick a product and your tank size.

Seaweed extractsWell supported

Ali, Ramsubhag and Jayaraman (2021) review seaweed extracts as biostimulants, covering growth, yield and tolerance to stresses like drought, salt and cold.

Why it matters here: kelp shows up on both sides, in Algen Extract, Amino Treatment and Roots Excelurator Gold, and in Bloom Seaweed and Seafuel. The review backs kelp as an input, not any one bottle, so plan one main kelp source (our read).

Ali et al. (2021), Plants (review)

Protein hydrolysatesEmerging

Malécange and colleagues (2023) review protein hydrolysates as biostimulants and link them to nutrient uptake and assimilation, while saying the mechanisms are still being worked out.

Why it matters here: Amino Treatment lists a pea protein hydrolysate, and Seafuel is a fish input. Same kind of input, different source, so it’s a plan-the-stack call (our read).

Malécange et al. (2023), Int J Mol Sci (review)
