Watch first: under 3 minutes
1. Bare, wet block = gnat nursery (75 sec)
2. Proper dryback, less algae, with Jeff from Algix (98 sec)
Why growers run them
Light hits a bare, wet block top, algae mats up, and that damp surface is exactly where fungus gnats and shore flies breed. The Algix card covers the top of the block so the light can’t get to the media, and it doubles as a sticky trap right where the pests are.
- Monitor at the block. Sticky on both sides, so you see what’s flying at media level, not just up at the canopy.
- Block light. Opaque cover keeps light off the media surface.
- Help prevent algae. No light, no algae mat, no damp surface for gnats and shore flies. No algaecides, non-toxic.
Pick your colour
Yellow is broad spectrum: fungus gnats, shore flies, whiteflies, winged aphids and leafminers. Blue is more attractive to thrips than yellow. Running one colour? Run yellow. Run both and you can split thrips pressure out from the rest of the population.
Pick your size
4×4 fits standard 4″ rockwool blocks and small-format media. 6×6 fits 6″ blocks and larger media for full top coverage. Same card and adhesive in both sizes. Pick the size that covers the block top without hanging over the tray or drippers.
Install in a minute
- Soak your rockwool as normal. Peel off only the bottom liner and leave the top paper on.
- Slot the card round the stem, put the corner holes over your drip stakes and seat it flat. Gaps at the edge let algae come back. Check the emitter’s still flowing.
- Leave the top paper on until about Day 21. It keeps the light off the media and keeps leaves and debris off the adhesive.
- On Day 21, pull the top paper off during normal plant work. From then on the sticky’s live, right as pest pressure builds in flower. Replace cards when they’re loaded, dusty or losing tack.
Read and record counts on a schedule. Trends tell you more than a single reading.
Good to know
Sticky traps monitor and capture. They’re not a stand-alone pest control program and don’t replace good irrigation, moisture management, sanitation or your facility’s IPM plan. Results vary by environment and cultivation practices.
